Community Partner Profile: Memory Cafe

Since 2021, Hope Blooms has been grateful to partner with Memory Cafe delivering bouquets and facilitating flower arranging activities with their program participants.
Flowers have a way of awakening memories, whether remembering a wedding flower, a favorite flower delivered to a loved one or a cherished memory of an outdoor garden space. Hope Blooms has joined with Memory Cafe to bring these memories to life through deliveries of flowers at Memory Cafe events and Flower Empower activities, where participants joined with volunteers to create their own beautiful arrangement. During these hands-on activities, participants were able to choose their own favorite colors and blooms to create their own bouquet. After a Flower Empower event, one participant’s daughter shared
“We had so much fun creating bouquets! My mom is VERY industrious and LOVES to work hard so it is so much fun seeing her flex her creativity muscles every so often. The smile on her face lasted the entire drive home! She can’t wait to show everyone the bouquet she created!”

Tell us about your organization and who you serve.
Memory Cafe of the Red River Valley is a welcoming, stigma-free community for people living with memory loss and their care partners. We provide opportunities for connection, education, creativity, and joy all in an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. Each month, hundreds of individuals walk through our doors looking for a place where they can simply be themselves, and we are honored to walk alongside them on this journey.
What makes your organization special?
Memory Cafe isn’t just a program, it’s a community built on belonging and connection. What makes us unique is the way we intentionally foster connection through shared experiences, empathy-driven programming, and a culture of warmth. We strive to meet people where they are, offering moments of normalcy, laughter, empowerment, and hope at a time when life can feel overwhelming. Our staff and volunteers bring heart first, and participants often tell us that Memory Cafe feels like their “home away from home.”
What kind of impact do you see Hope Blooms having on your participants?
The impact of Hope Blooms is immediate and heartfelt. When participants receive a bouquet crafted with such care, you can see their whole posture soften, shoulders drop, smiles widen, conversations spark. Flowers have a way of breaking through isolation and reminding people that they matter. Many of our participants share that the bouquets brighten their entire day, and often continue to bring joy long after the event is over. It’s a simple act that carries profound emotional weight.
Do you have a favorite memory or story from a flower delivery or Flower Empower activity?
One of our favorite memories came during a Flower Empower session when our friend, Kevin (pictured below) shared he would always buy his wife red roses. Sure enough, the Hope Blooms team had red roses ready for him to make his wife a beautiful bouquet to take home after their time spent at Memory Cafe. That moment sparked by something as simple as a flower became a gift for both of them. It was a reminder that joy and connection can still bloom, even in the midst of change.
What does kindness and connection mean to your organization?
To us, kindness and connection are not just values, they are lifelines. They are the foundation of our mission and the reason Memory Cafe exists. People living with dementia and their care partners can experience isolation on their journey. Kindness says, “You are not alone.” Connection says, “You belong here.” When we build spaces rooted in both, we create moments that strengthen relationships, restore dignity, and help people flourish.
How do small gestures—like flowers—play a role in the wellbeing of those you serve?
Small gestures often become big moments. A bouquet, a favorite song, a shared laugh, these are the anchors that help our participants feel grounded, seen, and valued. Flowers in particular spark emotional memories, offer comfort, and bring beauty into days that can sometimes feel heavy. These small acts remind our community that joy is still accessible, and that they deserve moments of gentleness and care.
Anything else you would like to share about your organization?
Memory Cafe of the Red River Valley exists because of the generosity, partnership, and compassion of our community including organizations like Hope Blooms. We believe in creating spaces where people can flourish, even in the face of cognitive change, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who helps make that possible. Together, we are building moments that matter and ensuring that no one walks this journey alone.
