A Familiar Face, A Lasting Impact

Something about Arnie immediately stood out when we met him at the Fargo VA Hospital for a Flower Empower activity. He was open in a way that immediately put people at ease, warm in a way that felt genuine.
Conversation flowed effortlessly between Arnie and Hope Blooms teammate Carly — full of laughter and those small, meaningful realizations of how much two people can have in common.
They talked, and just as quickly, they were laughing. The kind of laughter that comes easily when someone shows up as themselves and immediately puts you at ease. Arnie has a special way of drawing people in with his warmth, his resilience, his willingness to engage so openly. He shared pieces of his story with honesty and heart, and in doing so, created something more than a passing interaction.
A deep, meaningful bond was formed.
It wasn’t unusual for these visits to be impactful, but Arnie had a way of making the moments they shared linger just a little longer. He was a reminder that when someone shows up with their whole heart, it creates something lasting for everyone involved.
Weeks later, Arnie and Carly were reunited serendipitously during a Petal It Forward delivery to The Leach Home in Wahpeton.
The recognition was instant, along with a sense of familiarity that hadn’t faded with time. And just like before, Arnie met the moment with the same warmth, the same openness, the same unmistakable smile.
They picked up right where they left off.
This time, Arnie shared more about his journey and the life he was building in Wahpeton. There was strength in his story, but also a quiet optimism. He spoke with honesty, but also with lightness. And through it all, he remained exactly who Carly remembered — someone who meets the world with kindness and invites others to do the same.
Being with him again made something clear. Arnie didn’t just experience these moments; he shaped them. His openness created space for genuine human connection. His presence made people feel seen. And his spirit turned simple interactions into something memorable.
They laughed about their first meeting and the small details that had stuck. His love for popcorn. His favorite color, red. Pieces of his personality that felt even more meaningful now.
So, Carly created a bouquet with bold, vibrant red blooms just for him. A reflection of the warmth and energy he brought into every space he entered.
But what Arnie gave that day went far beyond a moment or a memory.
Through his willingness to be open, to engage and to share his story, he reminded us that these moments matter because of the people within them. That the time we spend with others doesn’t just brighten their day, it becomes part of ours, too.
Arnie didn’t just receive kindness.
He created it, carried it forward and transformed it into something that lasts far beyond the blooms themselves.
Help us create more moments of mattering for those we serve.
