Why We Need Each Other

July 28, 2026 | Written by

Life is richer when we share it with others. We celebrate together, grieve together, learn from one another and find strength in knowing we don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. Human connection isn’t simply something we enjoy. It’s something we need.

As humans, we’re wired for connection. When we show up for one another, we heal, we grow and we thrive.

Yet despite living in a world where we’re more connected through technology than ever before, many people are experiencing deep loneliness. For older adults especially, retirement, health changes, the loss of loved ones and reduced mobility can make meaningful connections more difficult to find. During these seasons of transition, a caring presence can make all the difference.

Research continues to affirm what we’ve long known in our hearts.  A study by Harvard University found that close relationships have the greatest influence on long-term happiness and health, even more than money, fame or genetics. Social connection also strengthens the immune system, supports recovery from illness and may even help people live a longer life.

Feeling cared for gives life deeper meaning. It reminds us that we belong, that we’re valued and that we matter.  That sense of belonging provides emotional security and hope, especially during times of change, loss or uncertainty.

Showing up for others often means more than finding the perfect words. Sitting beside someone in silence, extending an invitation, sharing a meal  or giving someone your full attention can speak volumes, especially for those who feel overlooked. These moments of presence bring deep connections and remind people that they’re seen and valued.

The good news is that meaningful connection doesn’t require grand gestures. Small, intentional acts of kindness have the power to strengthen relationships and build healthier communities.

Here are a few simple ways to nurture connection each day:

Check in on someone.

A  quick phone call, handwritten note, doorstep visit or thoughtful text can brighten someone’s day and remind them they’re loved and remembered.

Make time for meaningful conversation.

Whether it’s over coffee, on a phone call or during a walk, put distractions aside and be fully present. Listening well is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person.

Volunteer in your community.

Giving your time to a local nonprofit, school or community organization creates meaningful relationships while making a positive difference. Serving alongside others brings purpose, belonging and the joy of knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

Every act of connection, no matter how small, helps create a community where people feel seen, supported and valued. Because when we care for one another, we all flourish.
