What It Means to Belong

April 17, 2026 | Written by

Belonging isn’t about fitting in — it’s about feeling seen, valued and accepted just as you are. In our fast-paced world, many people, especially those facing life transitions or health challenges, can feel left behind. Creating spaces of belonging and reminding others that they matter is more important now than ever.

Research from the CDC shows that social isolation drastically increases the risk of premature death, with loneliness having the same impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Cultivating belonging is not only meaningful, it’s vital to maintaining health and one’s well-being.

You can cultivate belonging in your community in simple, yet meaningful ways. Whether it be small acts of kindness or going out of your way to show support, it’s important to continue welcoming others in and making space to hear and show up for others.

The first way is to listen with full attention. Putting away distractions, making eye contact and truly listening to what someone has to say provides an intentional space that reminds people that they matter and allows for a genuine connection to form.

The second way is to invite others in. Reaching out to someone who may feel left out or overlooked is a powerful way to help someone feel like they matter. Whether it be a lunch invitation, neighborhood event or asking someone how their day is, each action has the power to make someone feel valued and cared for.

The last way is to honor differences. Celebrate what makes each person unique and invite all perspectives to be heard and appreciated. We all have different views and talents that make us special, let’s celebrate what makes us unique!

Belonging happens in small moments of connection, kindness and shared humanity.
