Love Remembered in Bloom

At Farmstead Senior Living in Moorhead, buckets of fresh blooms lined the activity tables as residents gathered for our Flower Empower program activity. Lawrence sat in his doorway, watching quietly.
He wasn’t sure he wanted to participate. After gentle encouragement from our team, he decided to join in. Without much introduction, he began scrolling through his phone, sharing photos he wanted us to see.
The images held deep meaning. They were beautiful arrangements he had given his wife, Diane, throughout the years. Diane had since passed away and each bouquet represented a gesture of enduring love.
He stopped on one photo. It was the last bouquet he had given her before her passing. He asked if we could recreate that memory. The room shifted. This was no longer simply an activity.
With support from our volunteers, Lawrence carefully selected each stem. Together, the bouquet took shape again. Every bloom was chosen with intention.
As he worked, he spoke about Diane and the life they built together for nearly 60 years. The arrangement became more than flowers. It became a way to speak her name. A way for someone to ask about her and truly listen. A way to honor a love that continues even in absence.
He returned to his apartment carrying more than petals and stems. He carried remembrance, connection and the affirmation that his story — and Diane’s — still matter.
Now he looks forward to visits from Hope Blooms. He often welcomes several of our volunteers into his room at once, eager to share more stories, more memories and more of the love that still shapes his days.
At every Flower Empower gathering, flowers are the starting point. What truly grows is space for memory, dignity in storytelling and moments where love is honored out loud.
For Lawrence, love is still remembered in bloom.
