A Language of the Heart

We’ve visited Dolly many times through our partnership with Serenity Assisted Living. Throughout the years, we’ve come to know and cherish her.

One of the things that makes Dolly so special is the way she connects with people. Her kind eyes, expressive smile and joyful presence have a way of drawing people in and making them feel at ease.

During a recent Flower Empower activity, Dolly joined us to create a bouquet that reflected what mattered most to her. She knew exactly what she wanted.

Together, we selected each bloom for her arrangement, helping her find the flowers that matched the vision she held in her mind. She carefully arranged them with purpose and intention, creating something uniquely her own.

Dolly began sharing the meaning behind each flower she had chosen after her bouquet was complete. She is deaf and shared the story of her hand-selected flower through her beautiful movements. At the center was a vibrant yellow mum representing the sun. Blue flowers and accents symbolized the sky above. White blooms reflected her faith.

Then she did something we’ll never forget. She repeatedly tapped her hand over her heart and blew kisses with both hands, expressing her gratitude for the flowers and the time spent together. Moments later, she opened her arms wide for a hug.

As we began cleaning up and packing supplies away, Dolly made her way back over to us one more time. Again, she tapped her heart. Again, she opened her arms for a hug. This time, she added a gentle kiss on the cheek.

Dolly reminds us that some of the most meaningful moments require no words at all. Sometimes it’s our hearts that communicate what words cannot. We witness this every day through our work at Hope Blooms. Relationships form and grow through presence. Through kindness. Through taking the time to sit beside someone, create something together and simply show up.

Dolly’s gratitude was felt through her joy. Her bouquet told a story. Her gestures spoke volumes. And her hugs conveyed something universal: Every person wants to feel seen, valued and loved. Sometimes, the language of the heart is all we need.
